Clinical Experience is Critical to the Preparation of Teacher Candidates
The shortage of teachers continues to grow, and when indicators of teacher quality are taken into account the shortage is even more dire than estimated. Now more than ever we need programs to produce teachers who are highly-qualified, well-prepared—armed with the knowledge and skills to be effective in the classroom on day one. Access to connected data, provides programs with a lens into candidates’ readiness to teach and informs improvements in candidate support and preparation.
The nationwide shortage of teachers from preschool through high school is trending upward, projecting the shortfall will reach at least 200,000 by 2025.
Teachers with the least preparation are 2 to 3 times more likely to leave the profession than those with the most comprehensive preparation—including student teaching and courses in teaching methods.
High rates of teacher attrition have a negative impact on teachers, students’ academic achievement, and schools’ organizational and financial health.
"Clinical experiences are at the heart of teacher preparation. Having readily-available data on the performance of teacher candidates in their clinical experiences is essential to inform faculty about candidates’ strengths and areas in need of attention, as well as to identify trends over time. Ultimately, knowing what candidates know and are able to do in their clinical placements affords faculty the opportunity to make data-informed decisions for program improvement."
Ed Fi is free and open. However, there may be implementation costs depending on a number of factors.
Implementing Ed-Fi with the Teacher Prep Data Model (TPDM) can vary depending on the number of use cases being implemented and the sources of data. For clinical experience and performance, most of the data comes from your Student Information System and Learning Management System. Time to implement will vary depending on access to the source data.
We review issues and plan new releases of TPDM, so there’s a good chance we can help you. Once you create an Ed-Fi Account you’ll be able to access the current model and see if it fits your needs. If not, you can submit a ticket through Ed-Fi Tracker (Ed-Fi’s ticketing system) to request more information and to work with us to get you what is most helpful.
We recommend forming a core team of champions to tackle Clinical Experience and Performance with data:
– Program and Data Leads – Deans, Faculty, Analysts, and Assessment Coordinators
– IT Leads – System administrators
To start your prototype you’ll need an installation of PowerBI Desktop. You will also need to download the sample report provided. If you would like to explore the full Ed-Fi TPDM sample dataset, you will need SQL Server 2016 or 2017.
Our Quick Start Guide leads users through the quickest possible path to deploying a working version of the Clinical Experience and Performance reports using a small sample data set on a single computer without consideration for advanced configurations.
Download pre-designed Clinical Experience and Performance PowerBI files to help you bring your teacher candidate data together.
Install Power BI Desktop on your computer. If you already have Power BI Desktop, you can skip this step.
Open the Clinical Experience and Performance sample report. This report includes the data to illustrate clinical experience and performance visualizations.
