By using the Ed-Fi Data Standard and Technology Suite, Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (WI DPI) is collecting Migrant Information in a standard format from their Migrant Vendor System starting from School Year (SY) 2022. Thanks to utilizing the Ed-Fi Operational Data Store and the API, the process is stream-lined and consistent with their rest of the student information data collection process.
SEA – Wisconsin has 421 public school districts and 2190 public schools in their state with a total student enrollment of 854,959. Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction collects education data from their school districts, charter schools and private schools using their multi-vendor, open data collection system called WISEdata based on the Ed-Fi Technology Framework to meet state and federal reporting mandates.
Challenge – Migratory students often move many times in a year, experiencing interrupted schooling along with other barriers. Supporting Migratory students can help remove hurdles so every student has the support they need at the time they need to be successful in school, and to graduate college and career ready. This mission relies on collaboration between local educational agencies and community partners to identify and support all Migratory students. In the past, WI DPI was collecting the Migrant Information from Student Information Systems instead of getting it directly from the Migrant Information System thus imposing additional burden on districts and Student Information System vendors.
Solution – From SY 2022, Wisconsin DPI automated the migrant data integration process by collecting the data directly from MIS 2000, the system of record for the migrant Information using Ed-Fi Data Standard for supporting their local education agencies. In addition, this allows the Student Information System vendors to get the migrant data using the same Wisconsin Ed-Fi API.
Results – The direct integration enables the district users to view the current list of eligible migrant students enrolled in their districts in timely manner thus allowing the districts to review and provide services to support Migratory students.
